The new colourants are already being used by HMG’s distributor network and the company are also supplying to other paint and coatings manufacturers who utilise the colourants in their own products. With the impending arrival of Brexit, HMG has seen a significant increase in enquiries as companies look to reduce supply chain disruption and reshoring key raw material supply as part of Brexit preparedness strategies.
For the decorative and architectural markets HMG’s MSH water-based colourants are NPE & APE free, and contain Trace amounts of VOC's*, meaning they are better for the environment and exceed the demands of current environmental legislation. Designed for high-end decorative and architectural products, the 15 colourants of the MSH range are used in HMG’s own product portfolio and by customers who require high performing and consistent colour production.
The company has identified a number of benefits for manufacturers and end users including drastically improved manufacturing, speed of products and enhanced colour stability. Additionally, the MSH decorative colourants offer ease of application, and enhance application qualities including flow & levelling for a much-improved finish.
“We’ve utilised the latest pigments and colourant technology to produce these new decorative colourants and customers have given us fantastic feedback” commented Steven Hutton, HMG Operations Director. “The colour laboratory has worked exceptionally hard to develop the products and are adding colours on a daily basis.”
Via the company’s bespoke colour formulation software ColourBase, customers and users already have access to over 1300 water-based formulations for the MSH colourants across several popular colour collections such as RAL, NCS and leading decorative collections.
“The colour quality and consistency the new colourants produce has been game changing for some of our customers.” Said Danny Cleary, Sales Director. “By manufacturing the colourants right here in the UK, it means customers can benefit from fast delivery and ensure their colour production does not suffer from logistic and supply chain disruption, especially with the potential of significant border disruption with colourants coming from outside the UK post Brexit.”
The system is designed to be a direct drop-in replacement for existing market colourants and is fully compatible with automated tinting technologies meaning there is no need for users to buy expensive new equipment.

* The British Coatings Federation takes the position that the use of the terms ‘Zero-VOC’ and ‘VOC-free’ are false claims and should not be used in the paint industry. There will always be a trace element of VOCs, even if no raw materials containing VOCs have been added. Even water can contain trace amounts of VOC, supply chains for the manufacture of paint are often complex and VOCs, even at negligible amounts, can also be introduced during any part of the process, through using raw materials that naturally contain VOCs, to processes that introduce VOCs, such as washing raw materials.
It is impossible to ensure that every batch of paint is completely free of VOCs, just like it is impossible to ensure that every batch of a chocolate bar is nut-free because of the potential for trace nuts to be introduced at any point throughout the supply chain. Which is why ‘May contain traces of nuts’ is added to the labelling of chocolate. Similarly, BCF members have now adopted the use of the statement ‘TRACE’ VOC as part of the BCF VOC Globe scheme to improve communication to consumers highlighting which products have the lowest levels of VOCs. The ‘TRACE’ globe will be launched on the 1st May 2022.
