British independent paintmaker, HMG Paints of Manchester, is making its debut at this month's Commercial Vehicle Show, the single largest road transport event in the country. It provides a valuable opportunity to build the company's profile within the commercial transport OEM and vehicle refinishing sector and to showcase its latest VOC compliant paint systems, which meet the requirement of the EU Directive 2004/42/CE that comes into force next year.

Currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, HMG has a long history of supplying the CT market, gearing its high performance paint products and supply channels to the needs of passenger and commercial vehicle OEMs, trailer and chassis manufacturers, bodybuilders and specialist repairers and refinishers. In a supply sector largely dominated by four global operating companies, HMG prides itself on being the only significant independent supplier to the UK commercial transport market, still achieving volume growth through a mix of high performance coatings, accurate and efficient colour matching, a growing network of specialist distributors and the flexibility to develop bespoke products to suit customers' technical and aesthetic requirements.

With new VOC (volatile organic compounds) limits laid down in the EU Product Directive taking effect from 1st January 2007, HMG has been working hard on the development of compliant water-based and high solids topcoats and primers, many of which will be previewed as painted samples at the show. It will also draw attention to special-purpose transport coatings, such as its flexible curtainside finish PVC94 and its self-healing scratch resistant product Recover.

Whilst for coachwork and underbody protection, HMG will project itself as the anti-corrosion specialists, able to provide high performance products, application equipment, sundries and technical expertise via its distribution partners. Above all, in a sector increasingly characterised by standardised products and service, HMG will emphasise its ability to shape itself to the customer, rather than customer requirements needing to fit the supplier's offering. It's flexible production plant and highly experienced R&D department enables the firm to develop and formulate bespoke coatings for OEMs, trailer manufacturers and vehicle refinishers, with no minimum volume requirement.

An in-house library of 50,000 plus colours, a web-based colour retrieval system and its GretagMacbeth colour technology partnership further allow HMG Paints and its CT distributors to match OEM shade standards accurately and mix custom colours for bodybuilders and refinishers, as well as providing livery design and management back-up. In a technically-challenging finishing and refinishing sector, the company also provides up-to-date advice and training on such key aspects as surface preparation, corrosion control, application methods, health & safety compliance and product handling and storage.
