The steel sculpture is the work of Manchester-based artist Jonathan Woolfenden and has been a familiar, eye-catching landmark outside the factory site on Collyhurst Road for 22 years.
It was first constructed in a workshop underneath the Arches at the bottom of Collyhurst Road before a team from HMG Paints pushed the finished submarine up the road to its current proud position emerging from the ground.
As a manufacturer of high performance paints for industrial, commercial vehicle and automotive applications, the family-owned firm clearly have the expertise for a patriotic decorating job of this scale.
The submarine itself represents ‘emergence’ and is known locally as the ‘Dreadnowt’, meaning ‘to fear nothing’. Employees at HMG believe this is an important message for Roy Hodgson’s squad preparing for their opening match against Italy on Saturday 14th June.
“As a Manchester-based company, football is always at the forefront of people’s minds”, said HMG’s Marketing Manager, Paddy Dyson. “By giving the ‘Dreadnowt’ a colourful makeover, we hoped to inspire more people to show their support for the boys in Brazil.”
