Chipping is caused by flying debris such as little stones and hard objects. Whilst the painter has little control over local road surfaces and conditions, the painter can take steps to minimise probability and severity of chipping.
When a surface has been chipped it can become a nucleus for further degradation and corrosion to occur. "Touching in" these areas with a small brush is recommended. Where the damage is more severe and where corrosion has already begun, (often evident by the appearance of creep and blistering) then the surface may require preparing and repainting.
